June 20-22, 2014
Our annual June camping trip was to Porteau Cove this year. Every year Rob & Marnie and us head out for a quick weekend of camping away. We decided to try somewhere new this year. Porteau Cove is just past Lion's Bay but before Squamish along the Sea to Sky highway that leads to Whistler. What a beautifully gorgeous location and I certainly want to go back.
We shared a double site. We arrived earlier than Rob and Marnie. It was the last day of school which was a half day so right after the kids and I were home from school we packed up and headed out. The drive was pretty good for a Friday drive through Vancouver! and we arrived, could set up and mostly be finished dinner by the time the VanEgmonds arrived. This is highly unusual as usually even if we leave home first we generally get to our destination later! Somehow we are always slower! but not this year!
Situated on the most southerly fjord in North America, the park features waterfront campsites with a view over Howe Sound to the mountains beyond. An old ship has been sunk to provide interest for Scuba divers and to attract marine life. There are special facilities for divers. Adjacent train tracks are active and occasional noise disturbance may occur.
That stinkin' train scared the wits out of me in the middle of the night! It sounds like it's going to come crashing right into the trailer....good thing it only comes barrelling down the track once in the middle of the night. The Rocky Mountaineer comes through twice but it's going at a much slower pace and at a nicer time of the day!
Jake, Jordyn and Nicole were off and exploring as soon as they could! They always find the most cool things and sometimes get themselves into some predicaments.....like this one! This rock had 'stairs' in it and you could easily climb up it but getting down was a different story. Well....for Nicole and Jordyn that is. Jake just shimmies up and down like it's nothing but not the girls. He had to go help them get down, telling them where to put their foot.

Jordyn is pretty much a cousin for Nicole and Jake. I love to see them together, interacting, becoming really neat teenagers and getting closer and closer! I think Jordyn is like a sister to Nicole, they talk a lot and their relationship is growing more and more. Jake and Jordyn act more like cousins and I can get all the juicy high school details about Jake from her! Like about girls and stuff!
These 3 are becoming super good friends too. It's taken them a bit longer. Matthew's 4 years older than Brooklyn and Dylan but they really seem to click! When we were having our dinner and the VanEgmonds arrived, Matthew yelled out, "Hey there, where's Brooklyn, oops I mean Dylan?" Hmmmm, I'm wondering what kind of conversations they are having too! As they get older they too get to have more and more freedom and do their own exploring. They don't seem so much like little kids anymore and that's pretty cool!
It was Marnie's birthday on June 20. We usually celebrate someones birthday on this camping trip. Between Nicole (June 13), Dave (June 18) and Marnie (June 20) there's a pretty good chance it's someones birthday weekend!
These crazy kids swam pretty much the whole weekend! The water wasn't cold...something to do with the fjords and the fact that it's less salty because of the river feeding into this area....really don't know! but they swam a LOT!!! And of course they found cool and interesting places to swim!
Check out those muscles! I'm thinking one day we are going to have to watch out for this muscle man! He's ripped!
We had AMAZING weather. Super sunny and warm the whole time. It was windy all day but the wind went away in the evening so we could still have campfires without having the smoke blown in our faces!
Campfires have come a long way for us. It's so not chaotic anymore and we can enjoy it without getting all sticky picky with marshmallows the kids just want to roast but not eat anyway so we eat them for them and get all sticky and too full from under roasted marshmallows?!!!
Now... Dave starts a fire. We calmly sit by it and listen to the kids tell us all about their juicy school stories brought on by burning all their school papers! We have them roast us some perfect marshmallows and eat Smores without being sticky all OVER THE PLACE! Ahhhh, never thought the day would come that campfires were relaxing but we are having them!!!
.....and I never thought this day would come so soon too!!!
Nicole is frying the pancakes while I get ready in the morning and she asked to do it yet too! Ahhhh, camping is so getting better and better!!!
Maybe Dave's getting closer to driving with the trailer across the country yet.....okay, I won't press my luck quite yet! We'll be sticking close to home for a bit longer. Gotta get this company up and running smoothly first! But then....watch out Dave, you are going to go on a road trip one of these years!
There is a launch for boats here and the kids thought it would be a great spot for a swim! Crazy kids.
Dylan and Rob, fishing. Dylan LOVES to fish, that's a bit of an understatement.... he was ready to go fishing at 5 in the morning!
Matthew loves to fish too...but he doesn't need to get up at 5 AM! The leisurely late morning fish is pretty good too!
No....they didn't catch anything and it's a good thing too because you are not allowed to fish in the park! Ooops!
....he didn't get his head wet but he swam!
See?? Always at the top. It was warm there! and away from all that chaos that you see reflected in the back of the truck.
We had a little visitor....I got about 3 feet away from him. He likes chips and salsa!
Dave had to get Brooklyn all ready for the whisker rubs she's going to get from Grandpa Whiskers. That's what she calls my dad!
And last but not least some pretty flowers!
